The Family and the Castle:

Barcaldine, the 'Black Castle' is one of the few mediaeval castles in Scotland which is still habitable and which appears practically unchanged.  The castle was built as a military outpost in the late 16th Century by Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy (Black Duncan) who held a string of 7 castles across Scotland.  Barcaldine is last remaining in Campbell hands.

The castle is connected to the Massacre of Glencoe and Appin Murder.  To learn more about the Massacre of Glencoe and Appin Murder see www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/history/onthisday/   13th February 1692 and 14th May 1752.

Roderick Campbell is a descendent of Black Duncan.  He (+wife and 3 daughters) now live in the castle.
